When I booted up Call of Duty: Modern Warfare upon release, I immediately dove into the multiplayer, and that’s what I’ve been doing since. I’ve only just now finished the campaign and I am blown away. Modern Warfare has the realest, most hair-raising and emotionally-gripping war campaign I’ve ever experienced in a video game.
Most war games, especially Call of Duty, make you feel like a hero. They make you feel like this unstoppable force bent on saving the world at any cost. As you mow down your enemies with skill and precision, barely anything can stand in your way. That is not so with Modern Warfare.
Modern Warfare requires you to make calculated decisions even when rounding a corner. There is often so much chaos that civilians can be confused for enemies, and vice versa. You can also be killed very easily, even on the lowest difficulty setting, making the traditional run-and-gun an obsolete choice.
The night scenes in Modern Warfare were some of my favorite. They are especially tense, often requiring you to move quietly through terrain and houses, and attempting to get the jump on enemies as your squad whispers commands and responses around you.
The characters are easy to get attached to, as you even get the opportunity to play through a bit of the backstory for one of them. By the end of the campaign, you feel like you’ve actually fought for something that mattered.
In many ways, Modern Warfare doesn’t play like a video game. It plays like you, the player, are directly involved in what’s going on. Not because you get to make game-changing decisions, but because it really does feel like war.
At the risk that this has sounded heretical and dishonorable, Modern Warfare is obviously a video game and is nothing at all, not even remotely, like war. However, I can’t help but feel that this is as close as a game could get to the real thing.
The terror and fear were both there the whole time I was playing through it. I could even hear a quivering in my character’s breath as I aimed down my gun’s sights at my enemies. There is no time for second-guessing, and little room for error. This is war.
This campaign is truly a masterpiece. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. If you are stuck in Modern Warfare‘s multiplayer, which is great, you owe it to yourself to get unstuck and experience this beautiful campaign firsthand.
